What makes a composer? I would rather question: what should composers do- for ourself? for other humans? or for God?
For me, it is a process of understanding myself, and reflecting on the world while serving human beings with my music. Therefore, it would be absolutely meaningless if there is no existence of human-beings. As the matter of fact, why say that we are creating something new? Is new music necessary for humans? NO! We are not scientists! As a result, it is not even important if music is progressing or not because the world is a moving figure, so everything in the world is changing continuously - since we are under the rules of "Time and Space."
