張玹
CHANG Shiuan

In Mandarin, written musical notes are nicknamed bean sprouts. Shiuan Chang (b. 1989) has been farming them full time, though his harvest cannot be eaten and may not even feed the spirit. His first memory is of pushing a baby walker: one step, one sound. His second birth came while copying the Heart Sutra by hand. Through sound in motion, he seeks to let go of the distinction between past and future.

Shiuan Chang’s music has been described as “spiritual, light, and comforting” (Classic Agenda) and as music that “grounds memory and emotion when we are adrift” (I CARE IF YOU LISTEN). Rooted in Buddhist practice, his music begins in the body: sound as the trace of a step or a gesture, carried across orchestral and chamber music, dance, and participatory performance. He is Artist in Residence with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra (2025 to 2027), for which he wrote the violin concerto 23.5°N / 121°E, premiered in 2025 by Inmo Yang with Nicholas Carter conducting.

In the 2026/27 season, Musicians of the Boston Symphony Orchestra give the world premiere of his string quartet As Body, As Vessel: The Voyager on January 24, 2027, followed by two further performances across Boston, as part of the BSO Community Chamber Concerts. His score for Cloud Gate Dance Theatre’s Sounding Light tours to Tanz im August in Berlin, Torino Danza, and da:ns focus in Singapore; cellist Mariel Roberts performs I, We in Philadelphia and New York; the Avanti Orchestra plays Diu Diu Diu Diu Dang near Washington, D.C.; and his collaboration with video artist Tirtza Even is shown in Chicago.

His recent large works include two flagship productions for the Taiwan International Festival of Arts (2021) and A Fate So Fleeting, A Love So Deep (2022) for orchestra, choir, and three singers, all with the Taiwan Philharmonic; and People Concerto (2026), a participatory composed theater work premiered at Weiwuying by Ictus Ensemble and Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart and named a finalist for The Lumen Prize.

He has written for or collaborated with the Tonkünstler Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Taiwan Philharmonic, The Orchestra Now, the Albany Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Civic Symphony Orchestra, and with ensembles including Ictus, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Mivos Quartet, Asasello Quartett, Ensemble Musicatreize, Ekmeles, and Les Métaboles. His music has been heard at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Suntory Hall, the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie, Chicago Symphony Center, Jordan Hall, the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Royaumont, Berliner Festspiele, and the Grafenegg Festival.

In 2016 he founded Innuan in New York, curating sound, space, and technology projects at Columbia University’s Jerome L. Greene Science Center, Cornell’s Johnson Museum of Art, the Center for Italian Modern Art, and Fotografiska. With interior designer Yuanyuan Ma, he later founded the multidisciplinary studio STUDIO F.A.C.E.

He received the 2018 Chicago Civic Symphony Composer Prize and the 2021 Asian Cultural Council Award, and has held residencies at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation (2023), Djerassi (2024), and IDA Art Residency (2026). His first album, Earthing, commissioned by Dun Ren Psychiatric Hospital, was released in February 2024. In 2015 he organized a benefit concert for the Genesis Social Welfare Foundation and scored the twentieth anniversary documentary of the Children Are Us Foundation.

在 2026–27 樂季期間，張玹的作品發表涵蓋歐美重要場館與樂團系列：《定光》（Sounding Light）於柏林八月舞蹈節與義大利都靈舞蹈節（Torino Danza Festival）展開國際巡演；大提琴獨奏作品《I, We》由大提琴家 Mariel Roberts Musa 於費城與紐約兩地演出；管弦樂作品《Diu Diu Diu Diu Dang》由 Avanti Orchestra 於大華府地區演出；於芝加哥呈現與影像藝術家 Tirtza Even 合作之跨界計畫；弦樂四重奏新作《As Body, As Vessel: The Voyager》則獲選列入波士頓交響樂團官方正式樂季之「社區室內樂音樂會系列」（BSO Community Chamber Concerts），於 2027 年 1 月至 2 月間由波士頓交響樂團樂手（Musicians of the Boston Symphony Orchestra）於波士頓三處場館發表世界首演並展開系列巡演。

張玹於2020年雲門舞集《定光》擔任聲音暨人聲創作，帶領表演者用身體尋找聲音的共鳴；2021 TIFA 《千年舞臺，我卻沒怎麼活過》以及 2021 TIFA《我庄三部曲》擔任作曲；2022年創作改編自龍應台第一本小說《大武山下》之75分鐘清唱劇《緣那麼淺，愛那麼深》；2025年由小提琴家梁仁模與台北市立交響樂團首演小提琴協奏曲《23.5N / 121E》；2026年《眾人協奏曲》於高雄衛武營首演。

其作品曾受邀於紐約卡內基音樂廳，林肯中心，芝加哥交響中心，東京三多利音樂廳，莫斯科愛樂廳，法國 Royaumont，奧地利 Grafenegg，柏林愛樂室內樂廳，日內瓦 Archipel Festival，國家音樂廳，衛武營等地演出，並在這幾年陸續受邀與 Tonkunstler Orchestra，雲門舞集，比利時強音古典樂團，印第安納波里斯管弦樂團，The Orchestra Now，台灣愛樂，台北市立交響樂團，芝加哥市民管弦樂團，普林斯頓室內合唱團，斯圖加特人聲獨唱樂團， 台北室內合唱團，莫斯科現代室內樂團創作與合作。

在跨領域與空間實踐方面，張玹於 2016 年在紐約創辦音元 Innuan，結合空間、藝術、音樂與科技策劃演出，足跡遍及哥倫比亞大學祖克曼中心、康乃爾大學強森美術館、普瑞特藝術學院畫廊、義大利現代藝術中心及 Fotografiska 等地；隨後與室內設計師馬圓媛共同創辦跨領域藝術團隊 STUDIO F.A.C.E.，以團隊名義發表的科技與參與式聲音創作《眾人協奏曲》（People Concerto）入圍英國流明數位藝術獎（The Lumen Prize）決選。

除了藝術與嚴肅音樂領域，張玹也積極投入慈善公益活動：2015年為喜憨兒基金會創作二十週年影片配樂，並於松菸誠品演奏廳合辦創世基金會慈善音樂會。2024年初受敦仁精神專科醫院委託創作發行第一張專輯《安土》。
